Life, World No Thoughts »

Yesterday at around 3:00, our cable went down for no reason. Not only our television, but our telephone line and internet as well (everything comes through cable.) Nothing had gotten unplugged, the modem was working fine, so it had to be something outside the house. We called our neighbors. They had lost their cable services too. Time to call support…after being ask to hold several times the following took place:

Review: Speck ArmorSkin for iPod touch

Mac, Review, Technology No Thoughts »

I recently got an iPod touch, and as almost all iPod owners know, the polished aluminum back may look pretty in the store, but every scratch is easily noticeable. Not only did I want to protect the back from further scratching, I also wanted to make sure the iPod was safe whether in a bag, in my pocket, or anywhere else.

After reading a lot of reviews for different cases on forums and other websites, I decided to try the Speck Armorskin case (the black model–it also comes in clear, and camouflage, oddly enough.) It’s been great so far.

Interview with Nigel Eccles of Hubdub/PunditWatch

Scraps, Technology No Thoughts »

If you recall, I wrote a short post on Hubdub, the news prediction game. Nigel Eccles worked with three other people to create it, then later launched “PunditWatch,” keeping tabs on the predictions of journalists and pundits, and seeing if their predictions are correct. Simon Owens conducted a phone interview with Eccles recently on PunditWatch and on how the pundits are tracked. Eccles:

“So we decided that instead of inviting them on, let’s follow their predictions and record it on Pundit Watch. We did that through stealth for a month, and then at the end of the month we launched it and said, ‘Hey, we’ve been following your predictions, and here is your performance.’”

Hubdub, the news prediction game

Review, Scraps, Technology 4 Thoughts »

Hubdub is one of the most unique web ideas I’ve seen in awhile. If you’re into the news, or your conversations are usually about current events or the likes, Hubdub is a cool website you may like. Ranging from sports to entertainment to science to politics, Hubdub covers everything in a really cool way.

News stories with follow-ups that haven’t happened yet, found by users, are put in a poll-like fashion. For instance, “Who will be the next President of the US? or “Will Twitter go down during WWDC?“. You can choose your answer, and then bet virtual Hubdub dollars on your answer. If you’re correct, you gain a profit and it’s added to your “bank.”

Hubdub is free, you can sign up at Hubdub.com. I discovered Hubdub via a plurk by Ted Winder.

Work and Distractions

Life, Productivity No Thoughts »

Distractions go hand in hand with procrastination. It can hard to work with all the distractions that are just naturally there in everyones lives: email, cell phones, Twitter, music, television-all these can make it hard to get anything done.

iGoogle: Artist Themes

Scraps, Technology No Thoughts »

Google recently released a new section of themes for the iGoogle homepage: artist themes. Since I use iGoogle as my homepage, it was nice to see a lot of new themes to choose from. As Google says:

Now you can put the work of world-class artists and innovators on your personalized Google homepage.

They’re cool themes, and you can check them out here.

Back to Wordpress

Blog News, Technology No Thoughts »

It’s taken a lot of time and mulling over, but I am back to Wordpress, after using Chyrp for about three months. Although Wordpress does have some bloat, I’m coming back to it. With the release of Wordpress 2.5, my then tentative decision was basically solidified.

So now that the blog’s CMS is back to Wordpress, there are (of course) some changes. First off, all the posts I have ever written since my first blog at Wordpress.com are now contained in this site (including this post, there are 30). I’ve never had all my posts in one spot, and it’s pretty cool to have it now. This is my Wordpress.com blog, first ThinkDavid.net (w/Wordpress,) ThinkDavid.net v2 (w/Chyrp), and now, v3 with Wordpress once again.

Just thought I’d share that. I have a few posts-in-progress that should be out soon.

Presenting with Confidence

Life No Thoughts »

img0122.jpg

Today, my school held an Earth Science Symposium. It was a culmination of about five months of work by all the honor students, including me. We started at the end of last year with research on our topic, then wrote an article detailing our findings.

In late February, we started working on our Keynote shows, basically our paper in bullets with many more pictures. It was probably my favorite part of the project.

But then came the presentation. In order to practice, my teacher set aside class time to present in front of our peers. Being nervous, I talked quickly and my presentation was only 4 minutes, 40 seconds. The time rule was 6-8 minutes.

David: the time does fly
Nikki: really? I thought only pigs flew…
David: well
David: on Sundays with grapefruit.
Nikki: crazy.
Nikki: only Bananas work
David: but when it is playtime the tomatoes work
David: and the crayons do their harvest dance
Nikki: silly apples
David: pears are for kids!
Nikki: and then the hobos have a desk
David: sans any oranges, because they are at the beach.
Nikki: *nods*
David: Hanging with the purple cars and striped birds. Under the shade of a large brown shoe.
Nikki: Don’t forget to wash the imagination!!
David: And hang it out to dry, or it will get moldy!
Nikki: then crunchy.
David: and children will eat it and dream strange things.
Nikki: Stranger than they already dream?
David: It’s possible.
Nikki: Or impossible.

Ubuntu Volume Control

I was excited to discover that the volume function keys on my laptop work seamlessly with Ubuntu, producing a volume bezel a bit similar to OS X’s. It really is the little things that count. I’m really liking Ubuntu…expect a more detailed post on my experience soon! I’ll say one thing now, though: my Windows partition is as good as dead.
