The Battle Continues: Windows and Macintosh
Mac, Technology May 21st, 2006
Yes, it really does seem to be a battle. More like a Techie-battle.
For Apple and Microsoft seem to not be fighting each other as much as their users.
I personally use both platforms frequently, and think they are both rather ingenious.
Macintosh’s OS X has changed the computing experience, with many new features and improvements to make our everyday tasks ridiculously easy.
From the Microsoft Windows Vista screenshots I have seen (the best ones being from Paul Thurrott’s Vista pages) the operating system seems to offer a lot of flexibility and changes from the Windows XP environment. The Vista website linked above shows Microsoft’s view on the pros of this product.
I’ve seen many people complaining about Windows “stealing” stuff from Apple’s operating systems. That’s how things grow. Windows borrows ideas from Apple, Apple borrows ideas from another company, etc. An endless circle of research, development, and unveilment. (Have you noticed how many third-party enhancements for Windows have made a “dock” like Apple’s?)
That’s my take on the ‘battle.’

It sounds like you’re evaluating Vista based on the Aurora GUI enhancements. Is that right? I always thought the simplicity of the Mac experience was partly the Mac GUI but also the ease of completing tasks. Glassy icons won’t make Movie Maker into iMovie or WMP into iTunes. Maybe I’m misreading your comparison.

I am just noting how the Vista environment seems to be easier to navigate, however, I don’t ever think Microsoft could compare with Apple’s simplicity. I agree, the simplicity of the Macintosh experience and user interface is the ease of completing tasks as well. If you’ve ever read the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, you’ll see that, although Apple can’t control how third-party developers create their software, they are making an effort to have the same sense of simplicity through third-party applications and the likes. I installed iWork on my Mac last night, and was able to create both a Keynote presentation and Pages document within a half hour, from my iWeb experience. Concluding, I am not evaluating Vista based on the GUI enhancements. I was merely pointing out that Vista seemed more visually pleasing than Windows XP, however, I haven’t made a post going into detail on the actual usability of Vista betas as of yet.
