Is your computer dressed for Halloween?
Mac October 27th, 2007
As Halloween draws near, I thought I’d share some things I found online to dress up your desktop for Halloween. Just the desktop, though, not a Mac-o-Lantern or anything (1 / 2) .
Note: Icons/Widgets/Apps for Mac only.
1. Desktop Background/Screensavers- Well, first things first. You’ll need a background picture. Here are some places you can look:
- American Greetings: It’s a little known fact that American Greetings.com sports wallpaper for all sorts of holidays and themes. They have screensavers compatible with Mac and Windows, too. A free registration is required to download from AG.
- VladStudio Halloween Wallpapers: I really like all the VladStudio wallpapers, and their Halloween-themed ones are no exceptions. They look great on my desktop.
- One of my own Halloween photographs: AE Corn, Harvest, Orange, Hay (is for Horses)
- Iconfactory: Thanks, Chris.
2. Icons- Icons aren’t necessary, but really add to the Halloween effect.
3. Widgets- There are, of course, widgets for everything. Halloween is no exception.
- Halloween Costume Generator: by Left Brain Games. Very fun.
4. Applications- There aren’t as much of a wealth of applications for Halloween as, say, Christmas, but I did the best I could.
- Mac-O-Lantern: Although it does hog your CPU when animated, (as the developer says, “It’s animated, for God’s sake!”) it’s a nice touch for when you aren’t doing any system-intensive work.
I’ll add to this list if I find anything as Halloween draws closer. Maybe I’ll do something similar for the other upcoming holidays. Let me know what you think, as always, in the comments.

I did have Halloween-themed icons on my desktop (Spooky Stickers, http://iconfactory.com/freeware/preview/stkrhw ), but soon after replaced them with the awesome-looking Quicklook Canum icons ( http://jonas.seph.ws/portfolio/portfolio.html ) by Jonas Seph.
I guess I’m not really much in the Halloween mood, this year. Oh, well.
Also, the IconFactory has lots of nice desktops. http://iconfactory.com/freeware/desktop
